Marlborough
White
Sauvignon blanc
Asparagus, Shrimp
$17.95
Delectable in the classic Marlborough-region style, this zesty white delivers some sweetness at first, with plump flavours of passion fruit and gooseberry on a slightly oily texture. Then it becomes dry on the finish, with crisp acidity and a whiff of smoke. It’s a refreshing sip that loves a summer day – almost as much as you do. Drink it on its own or pair it with lighter fare, such as asparagus or grilled shrimp – or both.

This has the sensuality that you look for in a top-flight Pinot. The bouquet is gorgeously fragrant displaying red cherry, plum and a hint of spice characters. The palate is juicy and silky smooth with elegant texture, bright acidity and soft tannins. It’s absolutely delicious.

Durvillea Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2010 ***½ (3.5 Stars)
From Astrolabe, this clearly herbaceous style was grown in the Wairau, Waihopai and Awatere valleys. Punchy, ‘tomato stalk’ aromas lead into a melon and green capsicum-flavoured wine, fresh, intensely varietal, strong and lively. $16

This is even better than last year’s, showing greater fruit intensity. It’s immediately attractive on the nose with gorgeously ripe peach, pear and floral characters. The palate is juicy and lively with a touch of sweetness and bright acidity. The tasty flavours lingers on and on. At its best: now to 2012.

Durvillea Pinot Grigio 2009 (Marlbrorough, NZ)
$20, Screwcap, 14%
Durvillea is described as a ‘little sister’ to the Astrolabe range, with the wines driven by some of the ladies in the Astrolabe business. Nice people they are too, producing well priced and attractive wines. More power to them.
This demonstrates the last point admirably. Strictly speaking it’s borderline Pinot Grigio (a bit ripe for that) but who cares for such nitpicking. The nose is wonderfully Gris-ish with ripe musky pear and a dash of pepper. Nicely direct. Palate is light and rounded, a little viscous with oily edges. Finishes crisp and dry. A rather attractive mouthful of juicy round fruit this. Another wine that’s easy to like. 17/90

“Light, fresh Sauvignon Blanc with gentle, aromatic cut grass/lemon grass characters. Pure, delicate and appealing. A very good example from a challenging vintage. Good value at this price. 84/100″

“Rare to see a Kiwi Pinot Grigio but nice to see the label on a wine that clearly fits the style criteria. It’s a light, clean, fresh, reasonably dry and very drinkable wine. 84/100″

Found you guys when I googled for olive bins for our upcoming harvest on the 27th. Thought it would be nice to say Hi and see if you want to be sister vineyards! Cheers, Mike and Teela
I had your Durvillea Pinot Grigio at La Acadamie in Brisbane and loved it. Keen to find out where I can buy it from on the Gold Coast. So I went onto your website only to discover that you are the makers of Astrolabe too. My other favourite white. Tried this at a restaurant at Salt in Northern NSW. Have plenty in my cellar. You produce the best white wines I have tasted…And I am from Adelaide, so I know and love my wines. WELL DONE!!!
Hey Maria,
What a fabulous and comment and thanks for the compliments. So great to hear you loved our wine. Our distributors in Brisbane are Smashing Bottles (+61-7 3854 1883 or paul@smashingbottles.com.au) but they have also said you can get it from Emmanuels Wine Shop – Kingscliff.
Let me know if you need anymore help and again, thanks for your comment!
Cheers,
Sophie
